Volcanic history

Boggust Park Crater is a park located in the suburb of Favona. A friend described this as the “easiest volcano climb ever” because … it is flat. Once a freshwater lake, the crater was breached by the sea approximately 130,000 years ago, creating a tidal lagoon (like Te Kopua Kai a Hiku), and later a swamp. In modern(ish) times the swamp was filled in and turned into a sports field.

The tuff ring (crater rim) is still visible.

Our visit

We stopped by Boggust Park on the way home from Te Pane-o-Mataaho (Māngere Mountain), mainly to eat lunch. We did an obligatory loop of the field and had a try of the playground. I was very impressed by the public toilets here. Best volcano toilets yet.

This tyre swing was located at the opposite end of the park from the playground. The crater rim breach is visible here at the north-east end.

Directions and facilities

Boggust Park has public toilets, a playground, and a sports field. It is located at Lenore Road in Favona, a short drive from Te Pane-o-Mataaho.

Happy adventuring,
